Fair Trade Kenyan Shetani Sculpture

Akamba woodcarver

Handcarved in an Akamba woodcarving workshop in Kenya, this type of figure is known in Swahili as a "Shetani" or spirit.  This style of woodcarving emerged in East Africa with the Makonde woodcarver Edouard Makonde who popularized the carving of shetani to express the traditional animist visions of East African traditional religions.  The sculpture is 40 inches high and 15 inches in diameter.
